A base is the opposite chemical to an acid.

Red Cabbege Indicator

 Red Cabbage Indicator

Aim:

I want to find out how to tell if something is an acid.

Method:

Equipment:

  • Becker
  • Red Cabbage
  • Hot water
  • Test Tube
  • acid + Hydroxide
  • Dropper
Instructions:
  1. Get your equipment
  2. Rip up the cabbage into tiny bits
  3. Fill the beaker with 1 ml hot water
  4. Add the cabbage to the water in the beaker
  5. Fill a beaker with 2cm of Acid using the dropper
  6. Fill a different backer with 2cm of Hydroxide using the dropper
  7. Add a squirt of cabbage into both of the beakers using the dropper
  8. And mix mixtures that should be yellow and pink in a different test tube
  9. You should have a green-colored liquid in the tube
  10. After you get the green-colored liquid start to mix the different colors to create more colors
Results:

It was really easy to do this experiment and it was also super fun to make the colors.

Making the blue was super hard but the other colors were easy to make. My partner Bronte was trying to layer the colors to make a super cool pattern.

Making Sherbet

 Making Sherbet

Aim:

I want to find out how to make Sherbet, and what I need.

Research:

It shows me one method of making sherbet and the chemistry in sherbet.

Method:

Equipment:

  • Cup or any bowl
  • Baking powder
  • Citric acid
  • Sugar ( Raro)
  • stirring rod (Popsicle stick)
  • Teaspoon

Instruction:

  1. Get your equipment
  2. add a teaspoon of sugar into cup
  3. add half a teaspoon of baking powder into cup
  4. add half a teaspoon of citric acid into cup
  5. Mix together with stirring rod
  6. taste the sherbet mixure
  7.  Adjust the flavor if needed to

Results:

It foamed up inside my mouth because the sherbet reacted to the moisture in my mouth and foamed up. I add alot of citric acid so it was super sour. After I added some more citric acid the sherbet didn't foam that much so I added another half teaspoon of baking powder and I started to foam alot more than before, Because I evened out the citric acid and baking soda.

The Chemical word equation is:

Citric acid + Sodium bicarbonate --} Carbon dioxide

C6H8O7 + NaHCO3 --} CO2
